Howdy from grass country, USA

Hey everyone, and welcome to my blog!! Out here on the range for the last 30 years or so, have given me some time to think about things. Would like to share some of my life with you!! My thoughts on local , state, federal , and some world issues will pop up from time to time, and how they effect my life, and my business.
I am a 47 year old male, and have 3 children. One is married with kids of her own, yes, grandpa is a name I still look over my shoulder at! My next one in line is serving his country as his hitch with the Marine Corps is about halfway done. My latest is just 6 now, kinda our 'oops' baby.
I own and operate a cow/calf operation. This type of ranch is where I own the mother cows, and God willing, produce a calf once a year. After the calves are weaned in the fall, I
'background' them for about 100 days. Backgrounding is where I get them ready for their new owners, who will feed them out to harvest weight.

First, a little bout me. I am a conservative guy, not because dad required it, ha ha, but from necessity. With all the problems in the world, I have weather, health issues in the cattle,
market conditions, consumer worries, global trade influences........... Lets just say margin for profit, well, is slim even when things are 'rosey'
I Didnt vote for this current admistration, I am very concerned about the boat load of money being spent. Who is gonna pay this all back??? Like I've been saying in Youtube posts, "The Storm Is Coming" !! (remember the 'stampede' when all those banks failed last fall and winter??) Imagine the true effects of throwing 800 billion to the wind (with no collateral to back it)...........Now, who knows what the proposed 'health care' package is gonna cost us!!
yes people, US!! hmmmm maybe it would be better not to live forever anyway with this over our heads. I shudder for the generations to come. ugg.
Over the years, paying federal, state and local taxes, I have noticed that even though the tax has continued to go up, quality of life, or govt. sponsored programs have actually lessened.

Sure, seems like there is more 'problems' to fix these days, but dagnabbit, aren't these the same ol problems that have been around since the beginning of time?
Liberals seem hell bent on fixing problems that most could be 'fixed' at home.... Individuals are getting lazy. Looking for a way to 'skate' through life. Cant afford health insurance??? well hell I cant most years. I pay cash for services reqd. It hurts me financially, sure. And am well aware that it could wipe me out. That is life... it's a risk we take everyday.
I could get run flat by a bull, hit by lightning, run over by a drunk driver.
Does the govt. require me to wear a seatbelt? Yes.
Does the govt. require me to wear protection when working the cattle? No. (not yet)
sure, they do pretty well keepin the drunks off the road.
I wonder if this new health care package has guidelines for worker safety?? I bet there will be!!


I wonder if the Founding Fathers knew how bad things would get.......
It was said the Constitution wouldnt work, unless there were morals.
I have thought for years that 'we have too much govt. too many rules, too many laws'
Then it hit me awhile back. Without morals, we need laws! Can you imagine the state of affairs here??? Pretty sure our population wouldnt be 300 million now. People would be dead left and right!

I do believe in the 'Right to bear Arms' as well as all our 'rights'.
I Have the utmost respect for our responsibility of owning firearms.
But, I have problems with the anti gun crowd, their arguments are so so thin. 'too easy to commit a crime' too easy to kill someone.....
There are tons of ways to do this without firearms. Remember awhile back, some brick throwing thing in LA? hmmmmm


I dont believe in gay rights. That is a lifestyle choice. Not a guaranteed 'right' as afforded in our bill of rights. If people want to live that way, it's their choice.
But PLEASE dont force it down my throat. Or my Children's.
...how can such a small percentage of people have such a large influence in our lives??
It's not natural, something has gone very very wrong here.
FREEDOM! such a delicate word. what does it mean here in the USA??
We have the Freedom to burn the Flag. Expression. Is it right? I dont think so. That flag represents one of the freedoms which allows it.
Kinda like what came first....the chicken or the egg!!


Out here in the sticks, dont get too much gossip about whats hot in Washington. So I try to listen to Rush Limbaugh from time to time, Fox news seems to question everything. Ol Rush is my 'watchdog'. Sure, he is an entertainer, not a politition. I understand his humor, he's a hoot!

Been a typical summer here, not quite enough rain to call it above average, but probably enough to 'get by'.
Starting to mow prairie hay this week. Prairie hay is the wild grass still common here. Had a bad week last week trying to finish up alfalfa... Just enough rain to slow curing....not enough to really do any good..

All the hay is put into large round bales. They weigh about 1800 pounds. That is what I feed the cows in the winter when the snow covers the ground. That bale of hay will feed about 50 cows for one day, depending on how cold it is!!! I feed about 6-7 bales a day.

I am new to blogging, and will add pics and some videos from time to time. I have some video picked out on youtube in therancherman61 channel. Some are silly, some are political (of which I either agree or disagree with) some I like because they are a hobby I might like to pursure some day!!
If anyone has any requests they would like to post, let me know!!
